Experiments in transfers. Unfortunately, i can’t find any info on transferring ain image to glass that isn’t completel lame and cheesy.
My experiment to transfer an image to glass without using Tilano, LazerTran, iron on, etc. I wanted to xfer an image to the glass pretty much directly - though i realize that any medium i use to grab the toner from the xerograph adds a layer so the transfer isn’t really on the glass, it’s on the medium. i realize this. My goal was to NOT have the image on a secondary source and having that secondary source adhered to the glass.
For this experiment, i used Golden Gel Medium in Soft Gel Gloss - an assured success for canvas and paper - and Golden Gel Medium in Super Heavy Matte. To one side of the glass, i used the soft gel and on the other the super heavy matte. i ‘painted’ the glass and painted the image and left both to sit overnight, though i bet a few hours is sufficient (remember that glass is not porous and therefore the drying of the medium (sounds like the running of the bulls) takes a little longer. Later, for me the next day, i put some more of the corresonding medium on the image and burnished it onto the medium coated glass. Still later, i sat down to begin the usually laborious task of removing the paper backing to reveal an image xtransferred to the glass.
The soft gel lifted after a bit of rubbing and produced a skin. (i know acrylic paint/mediums can be mixed and dried on glass to produce a ‘skin’ that can be used later). The super heavy gel, while not as translucent as the soft gel, seemed to work better. There are pics of the soft gel skin, so the pics are of the heavy gel method and it actually stayed in place, on the glass, and didn’t get all stretchy plastic-y (plast-icky) as i rubbed rather vigorously.
Admittedly, i didn’t do the best job insuring the gel and the image to be xferred were burnished smoothly with no bubbles or gathers in the xerograph but as you can see by the pics, it did produce a nice translucent image on the glass. i placed a card beneath the image so you could see the level of translucency and the only errors in the image were due to me. i’m sure i would still need to spray some kind of sealer as i’m sure i could lift the medium off in a skin with the heav gel too with a bit of work, though it seems to be staying in place just fine.
i’m going to think about other ways to transfer to glass without spending a fortune. okay…going to bed now.
